Protest needs to be changed to riots

[edit]

the definition of a riot is as follows: A violent public disorder; 2600:1016:B002:5ACE:E19D:ED4F:6DFB:D915 (talk) 16:46, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not all of them were. Slatersteven (talk) 16:52, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
the majority of them were riots: this is history. Even when seen from Europe 86.6.148.125 (talk) 11:16, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is based on citations of reliable sources. Reliable sources refer to these actions as protests, not riots. Therefore, the Wikipedia likewise refers to these actions as protests and not riots. TechBear | Talk | Contributions 17:43, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is empty talking. Quote the sources. No journal from the left can be used for this. Only records. I will add a NPOV for this article. 86.6.148.125 (talk) 11:17, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
CNN, The Guardian, and Vox are both not a reliable source of information buddy. NH51907646 (talk) 21:21, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
CNN, The Guardian, and Vox are in fact reliable sources. If you do not recognize this, you are likely to be frustrated by trying to edit contentious topics like this. – Muboshgu (talk) 21:24, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Muboshgu, @NH51907646
Here are CNN, The Guardian, and other reliable sources according to Wikipedia referring to them as riots/mayhem:
CNN calling them riots:
CNN - What we do and don’t know about the extremists taking part in riots across the US
CNN - Police point finger at gangs and local groups for riot damages, contradicting Trump’s claims
The Guardian calling them riots:
The Guardian - George Floyd protests: police declare a riot outside precinct in Portland
The Guardian - George Floyd protests: the US cities that became hotspots of unrest
The Telegraph calling them riots:
The Telegraph - US riots set to scar economy for years to come
CBS News calling them riots:
CBS News - Pews Burned At Basilica Of St. Mary Amid Last Week's Riots
The New York Times referring to "mayhem for three nights":
The New York Times - ‘They Have Lost Control’: Why Minneapolis Burned ChillyKnight (talk) 10:27, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you arguing to change it from protests to rio=ts? Slatersteven (talk) 10:37, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Slatersteven I wasn't making any argument here. Simply providing sources that may be helpful in demonstrating that there were, in fact, riots, and that the specific reliable sources, including CNN and The Guardian, that @Muboshgu mentioned did, in fact, refer to them as such. ChillyKnight (talk) 12:50, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are indeed discussions of protests and of riots. But preponderance of coverage, at least as we've assessed, are that the vast majority were peaceful protests. I believe this article makes that clear. – Muboshgu (talk) 15:39, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The riots and overall violence were nevertheless part-defining for the event. It left its mark on the world and people want that to be recognized. If we are gonna keep the George Floyd protests and riots under the same banner (article) then the name "George Floyd riots" and the riots' association with the event should be highlighted. Do we need a FAQ on this? 16:34, 5 March 2024 (UTC) Yes, it seems we need a FAQ. Slatersteven (talk) 17:26, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We have a FAQ, but we need to add this frequently asked question to it. Go for it, Slatersteven. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:31, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, that is what I meant. Slatersteven (talk) 17:34, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The reason for my request to edit the text link to the United States racial unrest is to edit the date as it is no longer active or present. Koah15 (talk) 09:18, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
